How to calculate your grade from a score
Divide points earned by points possible and multiply by 100: Grade % = (Earned รท Possible) ร 100. 85 out of 100 is 85%, a B. Then match the percentage to your school's letter scale.
What do I need on the final exam?
If your grade so far counts for part of the total and the final counts for the rest, the score you need on the final is: Needed = (Target โ Current ร (1 โ weight)) รท weight, where weight is the final's share. This calculator does it for you โ and tells you if your target is still possible (or already locked in).
Reading the result
- If the needed score is over 100%, that exact target isn't reachable โ aim for the next grade down.
- If it's 0% or negative, you've already secured the grade no matter the final.
- Anything in between is your goal โ now you know exactly what to study for.
My class uses weighted categories โ does this work?
This handles the common "current grade + final exam weight" setup. For many weighted categories, treat "current grade" as your average across everything except the final.
Does 89.5% round to an A?
Depends on your school โ some round, some don't. If you're on a boundary, ask your teacher how they round.
Want your GPA too?
Once you have letter grades, use the GPA calculator to combine them across courses.
